Buckhead Atlanta   New Name in Luxury

History of Buckhead

The opulant center of Metro Atlanta known as Buckhead had a very unorthodox beginning. Its roots trace back to a general store and tavern founded in 1837 called Henry Irby's, after its owner.  The tavern was the stopping place for the traveling rich and poor. What is now streets lined with condo buildings and upscale boutiques was then a thinly populated wilderness. The area was called Irbyville.

The Henry Irby store was maintained throughout the  Civil War. According to descendants of Irby, he killed a large deer and mounted the "buck head" for all travels to see!  No one really knows why everyone was so amazed with the display of the buck's head. There were even jokes around town about it. Be that as it may, the nickname "Buckhead" withstood the test of time. By the 20th century, it was a plush suburban area of Atlanta known for its larger estates and its affluent occupants.

Henry Irby died in 1879 and was buried in the Sardia Methodist Church cemetery on Power's Ferry Road. The original store was on the corner of West Paces Ferry Road and Roswell Road. Lenox Square, a social and commercial hub, is the equivalent to the old Irby's tavern.
